SOC 600 Handheld
Bidirectional Reflectance Reflectometer
The SOC 600 is a portable
Bidirectional Reflectance
Measurement Device. Using a patented angular imaging technique the
instrument fully maps the scattering from a half-hemisphere above
the surface to deliver more than 30,000 angularly resolved
points in just a few minutes. Beam incidence elevation is variable
from, θi = 0° to 85°, while scattering is measured to nearly
90° off normal. The applied imaging technology allows for
unmatched speed in generating BRDF
data (Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function). The small size and ruggedness of the SOC 600
make it possible to perform sophisticated
measurements directly on the sample in the field. The
instrument currently measures BRDF in the 3-5 and 8-12 µm
regions of the spectrum. A visible version of the instrument with
three-channel RGB measurement is coming soon.
Novel
Angular Imaging Technique
Instead of the time and labor intensive process
a goniometric approach to measuring BRDF requires, the SOC600 uses
a novel hemispherical mirror and imaging technique to capture
the BRDF of a surface. Using a collimated source, the
SOC600 maps the recorded BRDF 'image' (shown at right) into
a polar coordinate system for incident angles ranging from normal to 85°.
Using BRDF data, other optical
properties such as: Directional Reflectance
(DR), Hemispherical Directional Reflectance (HDR),
Diffuse Reflectance, Specular Reflectance, Specular
Lobe, Directional Emissivity (derived from DR at
near-grazing angles) are easily derived.
